The University of British Columbia named Dr. Nielsen a Top Instructor in 2015 as student evaluations placed her in the top 10% of all instructors in the Faculty of Arts. From 2011-2017, she developed 12 distinct university course syllabi and taught the equivalent of 36 courses at three different institutions in BC and Alberta. These courses included large lectures, small seminars and hybrid courses bridging the best of lecture based learning and seminar style discussion.

In all of Emilia’s courses, she incorporates diverse materials from the social sciences, humanities and arts with innovative strategies to engage students in critical thinking and political activism. She has taught courses on a range of subjects from gender and sexuality studies to intersectional feminist theory and cultural studies to literature, health and disability. Now, as a tenure track Assistant Professor at York University she teaches in the interdisciplinary Health & Society Program in the Department of Social Science where she will develop courses in the health and medical humanities, feminist cultural studies of health, illness and disability as well as in arts, medicine and healing.
